In light of Governor JB Pritzker's endorsement of Daniel Biss I thought I should write with my thoughts. This is a disappointing turn, though not surprising. In a way, it’s also revealing. The Roundtable asked for my comments and here they are.

This is a local election for mayor. And yet major political figures like the Governor, Kwame Raoul, and Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky are being brought in to campaign for Mayor Biss. That tells you that the Biss campaign clearly believes his future prospects are in real danger. ..

Dear Mayor Biss,

When you first entered Evanston politics, I thought you were a progressive, intelligent person who sincerely cared about all Evanston residents. I voted for you in your mayoral campaign and in your campaign for governor. My disillusionment began in 2023 when you persuaded City Council Member Devon Reid to withdraw his motion to postpone voting ..

It’s good to have at least one candidate sign up to challenge an incumbent. Issues are raised that might otherwise stay under the radar. Jeff Boarini has never before run for elected office but here he is, an underdog, squaring off against a sitting mayor who easily won his last election and enjoys a serious funding advantage.

“I am Jeff Boarini, and I’m running for mayor,” Boarini announced to the room. “I am running for mayor to make sure that residents’ needs and interests are at the forefront of this community. I am running for mayor to bring transparency back to Evanston.”

Mayoral candidate Jeff Boarini said at Wednesday’s Land Use Commission hearing, “The mad rush to deregulate our zoning is rife with the potential for unintended consequences. I urge the city to slow this process down and be more thoughtful.”

In his first formal interview since filing to run, Boarini told The Daily that “people have been cut out of the loop” in city government. He vowed to “unite this community” by boosting transparency and accountability.
